Fans of Neighbours may still be able to visit the iconic Ramsay Street site in Melbourne, Australia, even if the show is coming to an end.
Whitehorse’s municipal council is attempting to save the beloved set as a cultural landmark and heritage monument. The councillors voted eight to three to protect the properties where the soap is filmed on Pin Oak Court and Weeden Drive.
Councillor Andrew Davenport called the locale, which also serves as the fictional home of one of Australia’s longest-running soaps, as a “iconic street and precinct within the City of Whitehorse” in an interview with the Herald Sun.
“We should not wait until production stops before acting… and provide the property owners the option to be a part of the process rather than having it imposed on them,” he stated.
Channel 5 stated in January that its contract with Fremantle Australia to support the 37-year-old series would not be renewed.
If no new broadcaster steps forward to support the show, it will be cancelled on June 10th, and filming will finish.
“It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle, and the entire production crew for their wonderful work on this iconic series,” Channel 5 said at the time.
“Of course, we’d like to thank the fans for their unwavering support of Neighbours over the years.”
“We understand that this decision will cause sadness, but our present focus is on boosting our investment in original UK drama, which has a great appeal for our audiences.”
