Neighbours boss reveals how he persuaded Kylie and Jason to return

“When they said yes, I was overjoyed.”

The executive producer of Neighbours has spoken out about convincing Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to rejoin — and it doesn’t appear to have been difficult.

After more than three decades gone, it was reported earlier this month that the two legendary characters would reprise their roles as Charlene and Scott Robinson for the soap’s approaching conclusion.

“Both Kylie and Jason needed very little persuading at all – they both respect the programme and the important significance that it has played in their careers,” Jason Herbison acknowledged to Inside Soap about re-hiring the two for the goodbye.

“I was overjoyed when they said yes because it’s a beautiful gesture of appreciation for Neighbours.” Ending the show without them didn’t feel right.”

The producer confirmed that the pair’s sequence on Ramsay Street had already been shot, revealing that he penned their material in “absolute secrecy,” noting, “Not even the screenplay department knew it was coming!”

“I was there on the day of filming, and it was a very touching experience,” Herbison continued, “and one that will stay with me long after the series wraps in August.” I consider myself really fortunate to have been a part of it.”

Scott and Charlene’s return moments will be “emotional,” according to a statement released by the producer prior to their return.

“It wouldn’t feel right to end the show without Scott and Charlene,” Herbison explained.

“We are overjoyed that Jason and Kylie have returned home to play a pivotal role in the series finale.” For them, for us, and I’m sure for our viewers, it’s been an emotional event.”
