The number of people who have signed an online petition to save Neighbours from cancellation has now surpassed 50,000.
There were over 53,000 signatures at the time of copy.
Since news broke that Channel 5 was pulling the plug on production, distraught fans have flocked to social media to vent their frustrations, forcing Fremantle to look for a new UK broadcaster.
Last week, the original Neighbours theme, performed by Barry Crocker, was also the most downloaded song on iTunes.
“Our audience has remained consistent, and Channel 10 would love to keep the show going if we could find a new broadcast partner to replace [Channel 5],” executive producer Jason Herbison said. “These conversations are ongoing, but there is currently no new broadcaster, so production must come to a halt, effectively putting the show on hold.”
We are incredibly proud of the show, you, and everything you’ve accomplished. But, for the time being, this chapter is coming to a close, and we’d like to work together to give Neighbours the send-off it deserves.”
Natalie Imbruglia, a former cast member who recently won Masked Singer UK, is the latest to declare her support for the show.
“Oh, I think it’s terribly sad!” she expressed her feelings on the situation. “After all, who wants to live in a world without Neighbours?” Let’s be honest.”
The production is currently scheduled to wrap up in June.
