If you, like hundreds of others, follow TG4 on Twitter, you may have noticed that things have changed today.
Several of their tweets, as well as their display photo, bio, and even replies, are all upside down.
That’s because Australia Day is today, January 26.
Australia Day commemorates the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788, and the hoisting of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip following days of exploration of Port Jackson in New South Wales.
What better way for TG4 to commemorate the occasion than with a photo of everyone’s favourite Aussie, Ray Meagher, aka Alf Stewart from Home and Away?
The image was accompanied by a tweet, which was titled “beannachta ar na hÉireannaigh ar fad atá san Astráil #Australiaday,” which translates to “Greetings to all the Irish in Australia!”

In the photo, the veteran actor is shown in a Mayo GAA strip, which has a fascinating backstory.
Before last year’s All-Ireland final against Tyrone, Sarah McHugh, an Irish lady living in Australia, managed to snag a number of the show’s performers, including the renowned Meagher, Shane Withington (John Palmer), and Lynne McGranger (Irene Roberts), and persuade them to back the Connacht winners!
Unfortunately, Mayo were defeated once again on the biggest day of the GAA calendar in a storey straight from Summer Bay.
Perhaps the Mayo curse will make an appearance in future episodes set in Australia.
