Ray Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart on the popular Channel Seven soap opera, has been a part of Home and Away for 35 years, but he almost missed his homage when he was nowhere to be located at the 2023 Logie Awards.
While host Sam Pang attempted to pay tribute to the star, the 79-year-old was still backstage after taking the stage to win the Logie Award for Most Popular Drama.
“Let me briefly recognise a titan in the Australian television industry. Sam mentioned Ray Meagher, who is currently celebrating 35 years on Home and Away.
Ray is not present. He is still in the wings. Backstage, things are becoming very wild. By the way, things are becoming fairly wild backstage. We’ll manage without him. Um.”
Until Ray was located, Sam attempted to fill in the blanks by saying: “Not going to lie. If he had been present, this probably would have gone better.
Ray Meagher, who has worked on Home and Away for 35 years, agreed to a five-year extension. To be honest, that makes me feel a little bit overconfident. To amusement from the audience, Sam continued, “But anyhow, there we go.
“I just wanted to add that since we were filming the ads for tonight’s show, we have actually grown rather close. I’ve really appreciated having each other’s phone numbers. And if he were here, I would simply inform him that there are some restrictions regarding the use of a phone. It’s not proper to FaceTime when you’re in the shower, Ray, if you’re listening backstage. Okay, that’s all I have to say, mate.
Sam was about to give up on the tribute when the legendary actor showed up at his table, but he had done a decent job of delaying the event while people rushed to bring Ray back to his seat.
