A future musical theatrical performance will feature Rob Mallett as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the role of a lifetime for the Home and Away actor.
In the bio-musical Elvis: A Musical Revolution, which honours the life and music of the celebrated cultural icon, Rob will play Elvis Presley.
Elvis Presley Enterprises gave the go-ahead for the musical theatre production, which will include more than 40 of the rock legend’s greatest hits and follow his life from his early years in Memphis, Tennessee, through his triumphant ’68 Comeback Special and ascent to international success.
It is important to note that the musical will not address his tragic passing.
Regarding the arduous Sunrise audition process, Rob said he was fortunate the material “just worked” for him.
That is the secret to effective casting: “If it feels right, go with it.”
The seasoned performer continued by saying that there was a “fine balance” between making sure he captured all of Elvis’ quirks without portraying the role in an overly “karaoke style.”
He was very theatrical, especially in those later years and the 1970s when he wore those enormous white gowns.
Therefore, a lot of effort needs to be done to bring this authentic representation of a country lad from Tennessee to life on stage and honour the man he was for the admirers, of which there are a tonne.
The musical will make a stop down Australia’s east coast starting with performances at Sydney’s State Theatre from Tuesday, August 1 through Sunday, September 10. From there, it will go to Melbourne, where it will play at the Anthenaeum Theatre from Saturday, September 30 through Sunday, November 26.
Cast practises are scheduled to begin in late June.
