Home and Away’s John Palmer star addresses soap future after ‘few ups and downs’

Star of Home and Away Shane Withington is frequently asked if he plans to leave the soap opera, but he has no intention of doing so anytime soon.

The 65-year-old actor debuted in 2009 as the grumpy yet kind John Palmer. More than ten years were spent on the Australian soap opera after what was originally intended to be a three-month stand-alone engagement.

And despite Shane opening up about the pleasures of his work, he doesn’t appear to be saying goodbye to Summer Bay. “Home And Away has been my life for the past 15 years, with a few ups and downs, but I’ve met terrific people along the way,” he stated in a recent interview with Now To Love.

“I have to play some very comedic plots, and it thrills me to do it,” Shane continued. I enjoy visiting here every day.”

The same is true of his co-star Lynne McGranger, who came on board in 1993 to play Irene Roberts. The 70-year-old, who has been a cast member of an Australian TV soap opera for the longest time, has been growing in popularity in recent years. She was nominated for Most Popular Actress at the 2023 TV Week Logie Awards in Australia.

It helps that Shane and Lynne get along so well that they frequently share the screen. Regarding their friendship, Lynne remarked, “We laugh a lot and we’re great mates.”

The actor who starred in A Country Practice concurred, saying that his co-star “is the nicest, kindest and most accommodating soul I’ve ever met”. Irene has had a difficult few months following her incarceration for providing assistance to an evading party. Irene faced a possible seven-year prison sentence, but all charges were dismissed and she was declared innocent.

John helped his closest friend get through the trial, but last week, after taking on the role of Bronze Medallion course instructor, he started having his own issues. John calls one of the students in the class “Man-bun,” but the student consistently corrects John by calling him by his true name, Banjo.
