Why did Ziggy and Dean leave Home and Away?

In its many seasons, the Australian television series Home and Away has given us some beloved characters.

Ziggy and Dean, two recent fan favourites, are in a relationship. But when did they depart from Home and Away, and why did they decide to keep the programme going?

In Home and Away, who played Ziggy and Dean?
Ben and Maggie Astoni’s oldest child, Ziggy Astoni, also has a younger sister named Coco.

Dean Thompson and she were dating.

Sophie Dillman portrayed the role of Ziggy.

Sherbrooke Down: The Road to Cataract and Inner Dialogue both starred Sophie.

Rick Booth and Karen Thompson had a son named Dean Thompson.

He was also Kayla, Sean, and Mackenzie Booth’s half-brother.

Patrick O’Connor performed the part of him.

Ziggy and Dean grew close after she divorced her ex-husband Brody.

They developed a deep friendship and then fell in love.

After Ziggy and Brody’s divorce was granted, they started dating.

Dean lied about being Colby Thorne’s accomplice in Ross Nixon’s murder, so after being together for a year and a half Ziggy broke up with him.

They both went on and stayed friends, but Amber, Dean’s girlfriend and the mother of his kid, ended their relationship because Dean still had feelings for Ziggy.

Later, when attending Bella’s expo in the city, the two share a kiss.

When Dean asks Ziggy whether she forgives him, she doesn’t respond, upsetting Dean.

Later, he is seriously hurt in a vehicle accident.

Ziggy tells Dean she loves him and expresses concern about his life.

After seeing the two together, her boyfriend Tane ends their relationship.

Dean and Ziggy later reconciled their relationship after Ziggy admitted to him that she couldn’t live without him and still loved him.

Are Ziggy and Dean a real-life couple?
Since Sophie and Patrick are a couple in real life, their on-screen romance is also present in their off-screen interactions.

In September 2019, they initially made their romance public.

Before making their Home and Away television debut together, the couple had been longtime friends.

They were buddies for eight years while they were both acting school students in Queensland.

After completing their degrees, they started working on Home and Away, with Sophie becoming a cast member first.

In 2020, they got married and got a puppy.

Have Dean and Ziggy permanently left?
If Dean and Ziggy will return to Home and Away is a mystery.

In March 2023, the couple made their final on-screen appearance in Australia.

It appears unlikely that the couple will join Home and Away very soon, though.

Patrick and Sophie left the programme when they made the decision to relocate to the UK.

Ziggy and Dean left Home and Away for what reason?
Dean learned that Amber, his ex-girlfriend, and their son Jai were relocating to Queensland.

When Dean understood his son would be a 21-hour travel away, the news hit him hard.

Izzy was Dean and Ziggy’s daughter, and they worried about how they would manage to keep their family together.

After that, Ziggy advised them to relocate to Queensland, saying there wasn’t anything keeping them in Summer Bay.

Because Dean is the father of both of his children, it meant that they could start a new life together.

Dean approved of their relocation to Queensland.

He eventually changes his mind, though, after learning that his sister Mackenzie Booth broke down after learning that her partner Gabe Miller had been diagnosed with cancer.

While Mackenzie was uninformed of Dean’s relocation plans, she looked to him for support, which made Dean wonder how he could leave her at such a difficult time.

Ziggy stepped in, though, and informed Mac about the action.

Mackenzie then gave Dean her approval for the planned action.

When Mac argued that whereas Jai couldn’t survive without him, she could, Dean was persuaded.

The two talked about their time together at Summer Bay as they were leaving.

They later bid their loved ones farewell before departing for Queensland.
